Dental Care
Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in dogs and cats, and it often starts quietly. Bad breath, tartar, red gums, difficulty chewing, and even subtle changes in behaviour can all be signs that a pet’s mouth is causing pain.
At Silver Fox Veterinary Medical Centre, we believe dentistry is about much more than clean teeth. It is about comfort, health, and quality of life.
Our dental services are designed to provide a thorough, modern, and complete assessment of your pet’s oral health, so we can identify hidden problems, treat painful disease, and help keep your companion feeling their best.
What makes our dental care different?
Every dental procedure at Silver Fox includes:
A comprehensive oral health examination
Each patient receives a detailed examination of the mouth and teeth to assess overall oral health and identify concerns such as periodontal disease, fractured teeth, infection, abnormal growths, retained baby teeth, tooth resorption, and other painful conditions.
Full mouth dental radiographs
Much of dental disease is hidden below the gumline. That means a tooth can look normal on the surface while serious disease is developing underneath.
That is why we perform full mouth dental radiographs as part of every dental procedure. Dental x-rays allow us to evaluate the roots, surrounding bone, and structures below the gumline so we can diagnose problems that would otherwise be missed.
Individualized treatment
No two mouths are exactly the same. Once we have completed the oral exam and reviewed the radiographs, we tailor treatment to each patient’s needs. This may include professional cleaning, periodontal therapy, extractions, and recommendations for ongoing home care.
Why dental radiographs are so important
In veterinary dentistry, what you can see is only part of the story.
Studies and daily clinical experience show that a large portion of dental disease occurs below the gumline, where it cannot be detected by visual examination alone. Full mouth dental radiographs help us find:
- infected or abscessed tooth roots
- bone loss from periodontal disease
- fractured teeth
- retained roots
- tooth resorption, especially in cats
- impacted or unerupted teeth
- other hidden sources of oral pain
At Silver Fox, we do not believe in “just a quick cleaning.” A proper dental procedure means looking above and below the gumline so your pet receives the care they truly need.
Signs your pet may need a dental assessment
Your pet may benefit from a dental consultation if you have noticed:
- bad breath
- yellow or brown tartar buildup
- red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- dropping food or chewing differently
- pawing at the mouth
- reluctance to chew toys or hard treats
- visible broken, discoloured, or missing teeth
- swelling near the mouth or under the eye
- changes in appetite, mood, or energy
Sometimes pets show almost no obvious signs at all, even when significant dental disease is present. Animals are remarkably good at hiding pain.
Our approach to dental treatment
We know that many pet owners feel nervous when their dog or cat needs a dental procedure. Our team works hard to make the process as safe, thorough, and stress-free as possible.
When your pet comes to Silver Fox for dentistry, our focus is on:
- careful assessment of overall health
- a complete oral examination under anesthesia
- full mouth dental radiographs
- professional cleaning and polishing
- treatment of painful or diseased teeth
- clear communication with you about findings and recommendations
We want you to understand what we are seeing, why treatment is recommended, and how we can help protect your pet’s comfort and long-term health.
Dental health is whole-body health
Oral pain and infection do not stay neatly tucked away in the mouth. Dental disease can affect eating, behaviour, and overall wellbeing. Chronic inflammation and infection can also have wider effects on health over time.
A healthy mouth helps your pet eat comfortably, play normally, and enjoy life the way they should.
